Your club, group, or class are getting together to watch a popular Hollywood movie or an Indie film. Do you need to pay royalties? Can you advertise on campus?
The short answer is, yes, it is permissible to show most movies on campus under the following conditions:
It is covered under an Audio Cine or Criterion license (the university has signed licenses with both of these).
The event must be free – no cost or cover charge. Showing films at charity fundraisers is allowed, but only when the cost is purely by donation.
The primary audience of the event must be members of the institution. Event advertising must be limited to media targeted at the University and its students and staff. In the case of print advertising, the advertisements may only appear in campus media (e.g. a student newspaper) and not in general community newspapers.
