 There are 5 steps to evidence-based practice:

  1. Construct a "searchable question" from a clinical scenario.
  2. Plan and carry out a search of the literature for the best evidence.
  3. Critically appraise the literature for validity and applicability.
  4. Apply the evidence to your clinical practice.
  5. Evaluate your performance.

One of the tools researchers use to construct a searchable question is PICO:

Population/Patient/Problem
Intervention
Comparison
Outcome(s)

P = coronary artery bypass  surgery
= preoperative education
C = postoperative education
O = patient compliance to postoperative activities
