Q. How do I search for patents?

Patent information is available either through some of the Library databases or directly from the patent organizations.

Use Library databases:

Scifinder-n
- Choose Advanced Search, then select the References search type (instead of Substances)
- Enter your search terms
- Click on Patent in the Filter by Document Type section of the side bar
Web of Science
- Choose Advanced Search, then select Derwent Innovations Index from the Search In drop down menu
- Enter your search terms

Search the patent databases directly:

Canadian Patent Database
US Patent Database
European Patent Search (also searches Canada and US sites)
